This is one of the very best books on British folklore published while the stories and superstitions were still current, in 1879. At this time the Folklore Society was bent on collecting as many of the swiftly disappearing beliefs of the British as they possibly could before they were lost forever. Concentrating on northern England and the Borders of Scotland, this volume has an enormous wealth of superstitions about that region. The crowning achievement of Folk-Lore of the Northern Counties, as it is often abbreviated, is its very complete and rarely matched sections on ghosts, local sprites, monsters, and omens. It is because of these sections of the book in particular that Folklore of the Northern Counties has for many decades, served as an invaluable resource for books on British folklore which followed. The author even delved into the folklore of other nations in Europe, such as Belgium, Germany, Iceland, and France, as well as parts of southern England. The only thing missing from the newest publication of this classic are the original illustrations, which for some reason were omitted in this facsimile copy. I was so excited to read this book as it was so full of ancient lore and practice. It was like opening a door to a time that has passed. A must read for anyone interested in old pagan customs.
